Obituary for Trinh Duyen Phan

Trinh Duyen Phan
Trinh Duyen Phan, 88 years old, peacefully passed away on January 1, 2015 in Forest Hills, New York.
Trinh Duyen Phan was born in Phu Tho, Vietnam on October 26, 1927. As the eldest daughter, she loved and worshiped her mother who passed away when she was only eleven years old. Her mother was the wife of an owner of plantations, forestry logging, gold and coal mines. Her mother’s home was transformed into a make-shift hospital, which fed and cared for the poor and sick villagers. During the Japanese war, millions of people died of starvation. She helped her mother make rice soup in order to feed these unfortunate people. In spite of all their efforts, most of them died even after they tried to help them. Her mother had her workers make coffins and gave them proper burials. As a sign of gratitude, the Vietnamese Royal family sent their convoy to attend her mother’s funeral.
Our mother continued in her mother’s legacy. Whenever there was a death and a family could not afford to bury their loved ones, she would clean the body, pray and ensure there was a proper burial. She donated funds to run hospices and home for people with leprosy who were quarantined on a small island in Vietnam.
Our mother donated funds to build many Buddhist temples and Roman Catholic churches. She devotedly supported the nuns, monks and priests.
Since her departure from this Earth, churches and temples in Seattle - USA, Nevada – USA, Lille - France and Ben Tre – Vietnam have been praying for our mother.
Our mother loved her family, cousins, friends and neighbors. In fact, she treated everyone as family. She took care of her brother-in-law’s three daughters and loved them as though they were her own children. These daughters lost their father when they were very young, just like her. She also promised her father to take care of her younger sister, which meant her niece and nephews would also be under her care and protection. She loved and supported her sister family who live in Seattle. She was a selfless leader and a role model for all of her relatives and close friends all over the world, including the USA, Vietnam, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Taiwan, England, China, Canada, Singapore, Australia and Thailand.
When the French lost the war in Vietnam, the country split into two. She was forced to leave her 9-month old baby girl behind with her mother-in-law. She believed that they would reunite after two years, as was laid out in the Geneva Accords. She missed her baby and lived with painful guilt for twenty years until the Vietnam War was over. During the fall of Saigon, she made the decision not to evacuate to the US because she wanted to reunite with her daughter. Finally, she got her wish to meet her daughter who had become a beautiful young lady who looked just like her when she was young. (By the way, she used to be Ms. HaNoi, the most beautiful lady in the city). Our father was so proud whenever she would get in his convertible with a bunch of her younger teenager cousins. He would drive around to warn all the young men that she was not available. She even had an epic love story that will be told in the family for many generations to come.
She loved riding horses from one hill to another and riding elephants with her father. She enjoyed driving, reading, travelling and keeping up with fashions, including beautiful hair styles.
Our mother had an adventurous and beautiful life. She created a great impact on her community by helping those less fortunate than her and by raising a wonderful family who will carry on her legacy of filial love and compassion.
Our mother was preceded in death by her parents, Trinh Leang and Peng Shy; her husband, Quach Anh Hao; a brother, Trinh Tai Luc; and a sister Trinh Tai To.
