Irene Ann Sheehan, 85, of Middle Village, NY, passed away peacefully on December 31. Born in Bronx, NY, Irene was the daughter of the late Jeremiah and Mary (Luella) Sheehan. She worked for the City of New York, first as a courtroom stenographer and then as a personnel manager for the Board of Standards and Appeals. During her retirement she took loving care of her parents, served as a eucharistic minister with Resurrection-Ascension Church in Rego Park, and volunteered at St. John’s Hospital and local nursing homes. She loved to travel and spend time with her extended family. She is pre-deceased by her brother, Jerry Sheehan, and is survived by her sister-in-law, Patricia Sheehan; her niece and nephews, Carleen, Jerry, and Dan; their spouses, Mark, Elizabeth, and Sherry; their children, Scott, Paige, and Russell; and many loving cousins and friends around the world. The family plans a private funeral and will organize a memorial gathering with family and friends at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Irene Sheehan Memorial Fund for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital

Remembering Irene - a true lady in every sense of the word. As Irene and I would talk at our Marian Rosary gatherings (Irene joined a few years ago and was a faithful member), as we volunteered at the Dry Harbor Nursing Home on Saturdays, and for several years at the Narva's prayer group, I always enjoyed her quiet demeanor and cute sense of humor. A favorite memory is a St. Patrick's Day dinner that Irene cooked for myself and two others in her lovely home. The pots roared, lots of kitchen activity and then a delicious corned beef dinner with all the trimmings came forth to a pretty set table. What a fun afternoon and St. Pat's celebration! Irene enjoyed talking about her family, especially holiday visits. She happily related a recent family ride with a puppy as her companion - she loved it! My family always enjoyed having Irene as a guest in our home, especially at our last post-Christmas "Ladies Gathering". One of the special times she was here was at a party for our retiring pastor Father Amato. She always enjoyed her conversations with Father. Irene's passing shocked us all. We shall remember her gentle presence in so many places in our parish community. We will miss her. May the Blessed Mother and her Son welcome her back home.

I am deeply saddened by the loss of Irene. She was a dear friend and neighbor for more than thirty years. She truly loved my daughter Misty and joined us to celebrate her birthdays, Christmas and her marriage. Irene loved to shop for little girl clothes and bought the best outfits, always including a hat!!!
Irene was a great neighbor and a loving friend. We celebrated many New Years Eves together and laughed a lot. I could always count on great discussions and advice from her. I will miss the twinkle in her eye, her wry sense of humor, and her friendship.
My heartfelt condolences to the family. She spoke proudly about all of you often and took great joy in your successes and accomplishments.
I will miss her desperately.

Thanks for visiting, Marlene. Irene was definitely very fond of you and Misty. I will let you know when we have the memorial service in the coming months.

I called you last week on December 28th since I had not seen you in church since December 13, and left a message to call me, but you did not call back. Then on Sunday, I heard the announcement in church. What a shock it was. You were a beautiful soul inside and out and you were a Lady. You were kind and compassionate. You were a devoted Eucharistic Minister, and we served many masses together. You spoke about your love for your family, your parents, nephews, and nieces. You were always positive. And when you became a volunteer at Dry Harbor Nursing home and brought communion to the residents, you made their day. We will miss you, Irene. May the choir of Angels welcome you home!

Irene was such an easy-going, good-natured person, it's no wonder she was a life-long friend of my mother's. They went to St. Luke's together in the South Bronx and remained friends for decades. I'll always remember the lovely lunch we enjoyed with her-- my sister was in NYC from Ireland, and we took the bus to Queens and had a wonderful time with Irene. What a very special person.

Dan Sheehan Posted at 01:26am

Thanks for writing, Mary, and also thank you for the nice sympathy card and letter that you sent.
