Obituary for Isabel Leguillou

Isabel Leguillou was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico on December 18, 1926 to Triburcio Perez and
Concepcion Collado. The youngest of seven children and later had four more siblings. She was educated
in Puerto Rico and upon her high school, she worked in the Capital building of San Juan during WWII.
She moved to New York City when she was twenty years old. Married Joaquin Medina in 1948 after he
returned from South Korea in the Army. They had three children: Jack, Yvette, and Dennis. After twenty-
five years of marriage, she remarried again to Luis Leguillou in 1977. She became a widow since 1997
after spending a wonderful life with Luis who she loved dearly.
She had eight grandchildren: Jeffrey, Jack, Daniel, Christine, Julie, Andrew, Audrey, and Michelle and
twelve great-grandchildren. She was deeply devoted to her family and spent her life with them.
She made New York City her home and was proud to say she was a “New Yorker”. She worked in many
types of jobs while raising her children. She began work in the Federal Government for the U.S. Postal
Service as one of the first LSM (letter sorting machine) operators in New York’s General Post Office
(GPO) on 34 th Street in Manhattan. She then purchased a beautiful home in Long Island in 1969. Later
she worked for the Veteran’s Administration. When Luis retired, they moved to Florida. She returned to
New York. She traveled the world but was mostly happy to have visited the Vatican and Jerusalem. Her
favorite city was Florence because of its art history. She was a history buff and had an unbelievable
knowledge of world history.
A woman of many gifts and talents. She attended LaGuardia College. Incredibly artistic and creative. A
master of crochet making gorgeous, delicate baby layettes, doilies, tablecloths and various handicrafts.
She loved Puerto Rico, its culture and her heritage. She sang all the classic and traditional songs of the
Island and astounded everyone with her dancing. Flexing her body and movements with the rhythms
even until the age of 96. She was extremely proud to be an American and was a staunch Republican all
her life and never afraid to say it.
An incredible mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and mostly a friend
to all. She had a huge personality and brought joy with her contagious laughter and beautiful smile to
everyone she met. Her love for life was unsurpassed and will continue on.
We will miss her tremendously and will carry her in our hearts forever. Until we are all together again.
God bless you and may you rest in peace!
